Better outcomes

By prioritizing a safe, pro-social environment and fostering authentic relationships, Millennium is creating optimal conditions for students to navigate the complex social landscape of middle school while developing a strong sense of self. This approach can lead to better academic outcomes, improved emotional well-being, and the development of social skills that will serve students well beyond their middle school years.

GUIDED MENTORSHIP

At Millennium, the core values of awareness, compassion, wisdom, and purpose form the foundation of the educational philosophy and community ethos. These values are cultivated through our curriculum and co-curricular activities, creating an environment where vulnerability and intimacy are integral to the learning experience.

COMMUNITY BUILDING

Forum & Advisory Sessions

Spaces for deep, meaningful interactions are created through Forum and advisory sessions, allowing students and Guides to connect on a personal level.

Small Class Sizes & Mixed-Grade Groupings

Intentionally small class sizes and mixed-grade groupings foster a close-knit atmosphere, enhancing personal connections and mutual understanding.

Humanistic Approach

A humanistic approach prioritizes the cultivation of empathy, preparing students to engage in compassionate action within and beyond the school.

The Role of Guides

Our Guides—or educators—are pivotal to the realization of our educational vision. We are proud to have attracted a cadre of exceptionally talented and dedicated professionals who love middle school and embody the qualities required to re-imagine the middle school experience.

More Than Teachers

Guides at Millennium are uniquely skilled educators who embody and model our school’s cherished values. They serve as mentors, encouraging students to explore their inner selves and the world around them.

Modeling Healthy Adult Behaviors

More than just academic instructors, our Guides are mentors who inspire students to reflect inwardly and outwardly. Guides model and teach healthy adult behaviors such as compassion, curiosity, creativity, and non-judgmental acceptance.

Setting High Expectations

Guides set high academic and personal expectations while providing necessary support, challenging and empowering students to exceed standards.

Fostering Deep Relationships

Adult Forum Program

Mirroring the student experience, Guides also participate in Forum.  Through the adult Forum program, Guides cultivate deep interpersonal relationships and develop advanced relational skills.

Modeling Healthy Interactions

The strong connections among Guides extend to their engagements with students, modeling thoughtful and empathetic interactions.

Critical Role in Student Development

By demonstrating healthy relationships, Guides play a crucial role in teaching students how to interact thoughtfully and empathetically with others.

Forum

Forum represents the core of community and personal development efforts at Millennium. It brings to life the foundational aspects of the school’s educational philosophy. Each student is part of a Forum—a carefully structured small group including peers of the same grade and mixed genders, facilitated by a dedicated Guide.

CONSISTENT GROUPING

Forum groupings remain consistent over the three years of middle school, fostering a nurturing environment that enables the formation of authentic, deep bonds among students and their advisor.

WEEKLY MEETINGS

Forums meet weekly, providing regular, dedicated time for students to engage with each other in meaningful ways. These sessions are more than just meetings; they are dynamic spaces for students to:

  • Openly share updates about their lives
  • Delve into discussions on relevant societal topics and themes
  • Explore personal challenges within a supportive and confidential setting

The continuity of these groups throughout middle school enhances students’ comfort and trust in one another, facilitating deeper dialogue and connection.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING & FACILITATION

Forum effectiveness is rooted in small group facilitation techniques, refined over years to optimize interpersonal interactions and emotional intelligence among adolescents. Forum implements an array of social-emotional learning tools that empower students to navigate and articulate their feelings and perspectives.

STUDENT-LED EXPLORATION

Central to Forum’s success is active student participation. Students bring the content and direction to each session, whether:

  • Navigating complexities of immediate personal dilemmas
  • Expressing genuine interest in broader life questions about family, friendships, and global issues

This student-driven approach ensures that discussions remain relevant and engaging, promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility among group members.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS

By providing a stable, supportive space for open dialogue and personal development, Forum significantly contributes to the overall emotional and social growth of students. It prepares them to:

  • Face life’s challenges with resilience and insight
  • Develop interpersonal skills necessary for leadership and collaborative success

Forum equips students with essential tools for navigating both their academic journey and future personal and professional endeavors.

LIVING LABORATORY

Forum serves as a living laboratory for practicing:

  • Empathy
  • Active listening
  • Compassionate communication

These skills are critical not only within the school environment but in the wider world as well.
